The foundation--no foundation.

​I have never been into make-up.  As a young girl I would admire my mother's pretty dress shoes, perfumes and her jewelry, but the make up never kept my attention. I was more interested in boys and basketball. When I went off to college, my peers found it unbelievable that I didn't spend time in the mirror before class “putting on my face.” I was always the first one ready and referred to as “glowing”.  I think the glowing part was due to me being one of the few black girls on campus. 
I tried to wear make up casually a few times.  I even tried applying it myself (not wise for a cosmetic novice), but I always felt out of place wearing it.  I'm pretty sure my attempt was an act of assimilation to the culture versus a desire to look a different way. Fast forward to my wedding day.  This is the day of all days where girls all over the world dream about  being made up and dressed up to look their most beautiful.  I knew exactly who would do my makeup and I could not wait to honor her with the responsibility.  My cousin loved makeup and everything about it. I was her blank canvas.  
The wedding day was fun and memorable.  There was lots of laughter,  dancing, and old friends from far away cities.  But when I look at the photos, I find myself not recognizing me.  Pictures that should make me celebrate a new chapter of life actually make me feel--not like myself. I love my naturally beautiful skin.  Today, you will only catch me wearing lip gloss. My skin and I have had our rough times, bumps, and bruises, but overall, it has been good to me.  I'm done experimenting with makeup, I only use essential all natural personal care items on my face and body.
